1886년(고종 23년), 미국인 선교사 헐버트(Hulbert)는 우리나라의 초청을 받아 육영공원 교사로 근무를 시작했다. 고급 양반의 자식을 대상으로 영어 교육을 하던 한국의 첫 근대식 공립 교육기관인 육영공원에서는 영어로 된 교과서를 가지고 영어로 수업했다. 또 헐버트는 한글의 우수성에 감명받아 우리나라의 역사와 세종대왕의 업적을 스스로 공부해서 학생들에게 가르치기도 했다.
그런 그는 우리나라에 들어온 지 3년 만인 1891년에 우리나라 신교육의 기초를 닦을 세계지리 교과서인 《사민필지》를 펴냈다. 《사민필지》는 161쪽으로 이루어졌으며, 한자가 하나도 없는 우리나라 처음의 완전한 한글 교과서다.

Hulbert Publishes the First Hangeul-Only Textbook, Samminpilji
[An Illustrated History of Hangeul 21]
In 1886 (the 23rd year of King Gojong’s reign), the American missionary Hulbert was invited to Korea and began working as a teacher at Yugyong Gongwon, the first modern public educational institution in Korea, which focused on teaching English to the sons of high-ranking yangban families. At Yugyong Gongwon, classes were conducted in English with textbooks written in English. Hulbert was deeply impressed by the excellence of the Korean writing system, Hangeul, and took it upon himself to study Korean history and King Sejong’s achievements.
After just three years in Korea, in 1891, he published “Samminpilji” (사민필지), a world geography textbook that laid the foundation for modern education in Korea. This book was remarkable because it was the first complete Hangeul-only textbook in Korea, consisting of 161 pages with no Chinese characters at all. It marked a significant milestone in the history of Korean education by promoting the use of Hangeul in formal education and further establishing the practicality and significance of the Korean writing system.

ハルバート、初のハングル専用教科書『士民必知』を刊行

1886年（高宗23年）、アメリカ人宣教師のハルバート（Hulbert）は、韓国政府の招きを受け、育英公院（ユギョンゴンウォン）の教師として勤務を始めた。高級両班（ヤンバン：貴族階級）の子弟を対象に英語教育を行っていた韓国初の近代式公立教育機関である育英公院では、英語の教科書を使い、英語で授業が行われた。
また、ハルバートはハングルの優秀性に感銘を受け、韓国の歴史や世宗大王の業績を独学で By Myself に学び、学生たちに教えたりもした。そんな彼は、来韓から3年後の1891年、韓国の新教育の礎となる世界地理の教科書『士民必知（サミンピルジ）』を刊行した。『士民必知』は161ページで構成されており、漢字が一切使われていない、韓国で最初の「完全なハングル専用教科書」である。
