자귀나무꽃, 목수의 가슴에서 피다
낮이면 내리치는 무거운 자귀 아래
부서지는 나무 파편, 거친 손발목
목수의 하루는 땀방울로 절어 가고
나무 베어내던 철의 날은 차갑기만 하다
손끝에 박힌 가시, 굳은살 마를 날 없어
돌아서면 가쁜 숨뿐인 고단한 삶이련만
어찌 이 딱딱하고 무뚝뚝한 자귀의 이름을 따
이토록 눈부신 분홍빛 환상을 품었을까
밤이 오면 칼날 같던 잎사귀들 서로를 포개고
거친 숨 몰아쉬던 목수의 가슴처럼 고요해질 때
하늘을 향해 흩뿌려진 연분홍 깃털들
지친 노동의 꿈이 허공에 만발한다
아, 저토록 황홀한 꽃그늘은
낮 동안 거친 나무를 다듬던 목수가
그 고단한 생의 모서리를 깎아내고 남긴
가장 부드럽고 가슴 시린 영혼의 불꽃이런가.
[자귀나무 이름에 얽힌 세 가지 이야기]
자귀나무라는 이름의 유래에는 삶의 애환을 담은 역사와 자연의 신비가 함께 녹아 있다. 국립수목원 자료와 식물학자들의 연구에 따르면, 전라도 섬 지역(어청도 등)에서는 옛날부터 이 나무를 '작윗대나무(자귓대나무)'라고 불렀다. 재질이 유연하면서도 질겨 목공 도구인 '자귀'의 손잡이(대)를 만들던 나무라는 뜻이니, 이 나무는 본래 목수의 고단한 노동을 받쳐주던 존재였던 셈이다.
하지만 낮의 거친 역사가 지나가고 밤이 오면, 이 나무는 전혀 다른 신비로운 이야기를 펼쳐낸다. 어둠이 내릴 때 잎사귀를 서로 포개어 닫는 모습이 마치 '자는 시간을 귀신같이 맞춘다' 하여 자귀나무가 되었다는 설이 그것이다. 또한 이 수면 운동이 밤마다 다정하게 '짝'을 찾아 결합하는 것처럼 보여 '짝나무'로 불리다가 지금의 이름이 되었다는 국어학적 해석도 존재한다. 이 때문에 한자로는 부부의 금실을 뜻하는 합환목(合歡木)이라 부르며 인간사의 깊은 인연을 상징하기도 한다.
낮에는 목수의 손때 묻은 거친 도구로, 밤에는 다정한 연인으로 변모하는 사연이 있기에 저토록 황홀한 분홍빛 꽃그늘이 피어나는지도 모른다

The carpenter's day is soaked in sweat
The iron blade that cut the trees is only cold
Thorns stuck in fingertips and calluses never drying
A weary life with only a gasping breath upon turning around
How did it take the name of this hard and blunt adze
To harbor such a dazzling pink illusion
When night comes the blade like leaves fold over each other
When it becomes still like the carpenter's chest that breathed heavily
The pale pink feathers scattered toward the sky
The dream of exhausted labor is in full bloom in the air
Ah that ecstatic flower shade
The carpenter who trimmed the rough wood during the day
Shaved off the edges of his weary life and left behind
Is it the softest and most heartbreaking flame of the soul.
[The Three Stories Intwined in the Name of the Silk Tree]
The origin of the name of the silk tree contains both the history of life's sorrows and the mystery of nature
According to data from the National Arboretum and research by botanists it was called Jagwitdaenamu in the Jeolla Province island regions such as Eocheongdo since ancient times
It means a tree that made the handle of the adze a woodworking tool because the material was flexible and tough so this tree was originally a being that supported the carpenter's hard labor
However after the rough history of the day passes and night comes this tree unfolds a completely different and mysterious story
There is a theory that it became Jagwinamu because the way the leaves fold and close together when darkness falls matches the sleeping time perfectly like a ghost
There is also a linguistic interpretation that this sleeping movement looks like finding a partner and combining affectionately every night so it was called Jjaknamu before becoming the current name
For this reason in Chinese characters it is called Haphwanmok meaning the gold thread of a married couple and symbolizes the deep connection of human affairs
Because of the story of transforming into a rough tool with the carpenter's handprints by day and a tender lover by night that magnificent pink flower shade may be blooming.

ねむの木の花 大工の胸に咲く

昼になれば振り下ろされる重い手斧の下
砕け散る木の破片 荒れた手首と足首
大工の一日は汗のしずくにまみれていき
木を切り倒した鉄の刃は冷たいばかりだ
指先に刺さった棘 呼び凧が乾く日のない
振り返れば荒い息ばかりのうだつの上がらぬ人生なのに
いかにしてこの硬く無骨な手斧の名を取り
これほど眩しい桃色の幻想を抱いたのだろうか
夜が来れば刃のようだった葉の群れが互いを重ね
荒い息を吐き出していた大工の胸のように静まる時
空に向かって散りばめられた淡桃色の羽毛
疲れた労働の夢が虚空に満開となる
ああ あのようにうっとりする花陰は
昼の間に荒い木を整えていた大工が
その苦しい生の角を削り落として残した
最も柔らかく胸に染みる魂の炎なのだろうか。
[ねむの木の名に絡む三つの物語]
ねむの木という名の由来には生の哀歓を込めた歴史と自然の神秘が共に溶け込んでいる
国立樹木園の資料と植物学者たちの研究によると全羅道（チョルラド）の島地域（於青島など）では昔からこの木をチャグィッテナム（手斧の柄の木）と呼んでいた
材質がしなやかで粘り強く木工道具である手斧（チャグィ）の柄を作っていた木という意味であり この木は本来大工の苦しい労働を支えていた存在だったわけだ
しかし昼の荒い歴史が過ぎ去り夜が来ると この木は全く異なる神秘的な物語を繰り広げる
闇が降りる時に葉を互いに重ねて閉じる姿が まるで眠る時間を鬼のように正確に合わせる（チャグィ）ということでチャグィナム（ねむの木）になったという説がそれだ
またこの睡眠運動が夜ごとに睦まじく伴侶（チャク）を探して結合するように見えるためチャクナムと呼ばれ 現在の名になったという国語学的な解釈も存在する
このため漢字では夫婦の仲睦まじさを意味する合歓木（合歓の木）と呼び 人間の深い縁を象徴することもある
昼には大工の手垢のついた荒い道具として 夜には睦まじい恋人に変貌する物語があるからこそ あのようにうっとりする桃色の花陰が咲き誇るのかもしれない。
