The “Gagya Day” Celebration for Hangeul Day
[Illustrated History of Hangeul 27]

In 1926, marking the 480th anniversary of the invention of Hangeul, the first official celebration of Hangeul Day, called “Gagya Day,” was held. The celebration was organized by the Korean Language Research Society, a group of nationalist linguists, and it was at this event that the name “Gagya Day” was first introduced. “Gagya” referred to the first sounds in the Korean alphabet (가, 갸, 거, 겨, etc.), and the term “Gagya” was commonly used as away to teach children Hangeul, which was often referred to as “eummun” (vernacular) or “Gagya-gul” (Gagya script).
By the 1910s, the Chosun Language Research Society had coined the term “Hangeul” (meaning “the best script” or “the unique script”), and this term became widely accepted. In 1928, the event was renamed “Hangeul Day” (한글날), a name that continues to be used today
