1485년(성종 16년)에 호조 판서 이덕량에게 종로 시장 상인들의 한글 투서가 전해졌다. 영의정부터 판서까지 고위 관리들이 종로의 도로 정비 사업을 한다며 제 잇속을 챙기느라 백성들을 괴롭힌다는 내용이었다. 이덕량은 그것을 읽고 곧바로 성종에게 보고를 올렸다. 이에 성종은 판내시부사 안중경과 한성부 평시서 제조 등을 보내 상인들의 요구 사항을 듣게 했다. 이 사건으로 당시 하층민에 속한 상인들도 쉽게 한글을 배울 수 있었으며, 한글이 널리 보급되었다는 것을 알 수 있다.

Merchants in Jongno Criticize the Authorities Using Hangeul

In 1485 (the 16th year of King Seongjong’s reign), a petition written in Hangeul by merchants from the Jongno market was delivered to Lee Deok-ryang, the Minister of Finance. The petition criticized high-ranking officials, from the Prime Minister to the Ministers, for exploiting the road maintenance project in Jongno for their own gain, which caused suffering for the common people.

Lee Deok-ryang read the petition and immediately reported it to King Seongjong. In response, King Seongjong sent officials such as An Jung-gyeong, the Vice Minister of the official of the Royal Household, and the director of the Capital market office to listen to the merchants’ grievances. This event highlights that even lowerclass merchants were able to easily learn Hangeul, and it shows that the script had become widely accessible and used by people of all social classes.
