세종이 훈민정음을 창제한 지 17년 뒤인 1460년(세조 6년)에 정책 기관인 예조에서 《훈민정음》을 문과 시험 과목으로 채택하자고 건의하는 일이 일어났다. 사대부들은 세종대왕 사후 하급 관리 시험에서 《훈민정음》을 퇴출했다. 하지만 세조는 세종대왕의 뜻을 이어받아 한글 보급 정책을 다시 추진하였다. 그 뒤 실생활에서 한글이 유용하게 쓰이자, 한글 사용을 반대했던 사대부들도 한글을 모르면 불편한 상태가 되었고, 한글의 우수성을 인정할 수밖에 없었다.

더 나아가 사대부들은 《훈민정음》을 정식 문과 시험 과목으로 채택하자고 청했다. 세종대왕 때에는 세종이 직접 《훈민정음》을 시험 과목으로 채택했지만, 세조 때에는 예조에서 자발적으로 훈민정음을 시험 과목으로 채택한 것이다. 더군다나 하급 관리를 뽑는 시험이 아닌 문과 시험 과목으로 채택한 것이다. 이 일을 통해 《훈민정음》은 명실상부한 고급 관리 시험 과목으로 인정받게 되었다.

Selecting High-Ranking Officials Through Hangeul

Seventeen years after King Sejong had created Hangeul, in 1460 (the 6th year of Sejo’s reign), the Ministry of Rites (Yejo) proposed that Hunminjeongeum be included as a subject in the civil service examination. After King Sejong’s death, the Confucian elite, or sadaebu, had removed Hunminjeongeum from the exams for lower-ranking officials. However, King Sejo, following his father’s intentions, revived the policy of promoting Hangeul.

As Hangeul became more useful in daily life, even the sadaebu, who had previously opposed its use, found it inconvenient not to know the script, and they had no choice but to acknowledge its value. Eventually, the sadaebu themselves requested that Hunminjeongeum be formally adopted as a subject in the civil service exams.

While King Sejong had personally included Hunminjeongeum as an exam subject during his reign, it was the Ministry of Rites under Sejo’s rule that voluntarily adopted it. Furthermore, it was not just a subject for exams for lower-ranking officials, but for the prestigious civil service exam for high-ranking officials. This marked the recognition of Hunminjeongeum as an official subject for selecting high-ranking officials.
