1481년(성종 12년)에 《삼강행실도》를 한글로 뒤쳐(번역) 보급했다. 《삼강행실도》는 조선과 중국의 책에서 모범이 될 만한 충신, 효자, 열녀를 각각 35명씩 모두 105명을 뽑아 그 행적을 그림과 글로 칭송한 책이다. 1428년(세종 10년)에 경상남도 진주에서 ‘김화’라는 사람이 아버지를 살해하는 사건이 일어났는데, 그 일이 조정에 알려지자, 관리들은 강상죄로 죄인을 엄벌하자는 주장을 펼쳤다. 강상죄는 죄인의 가족은 물론 죄인이 사는 지역에 이르는 사람들까지 죄를 확대해 처벌하는 엄한 벌이었다.

이에 세종은 1432년(세종 13년) 《삼강행실도》를 펴내 백성들에게 유교의 도를 알리고자 했다. 하지만, 그때는 한글이 만들어지기 전이라 한문으로 설명을 단 탓에 백성들이 쉽게 이해하지 못했다. 그 뒤 성종 때 《삼강행실도》를 한글로 뒤쳐 백성들에게 널리 보급했다.

Translating the First Picture Book Samgang Haengsildo into Hangeul

In 1481 (the 12th year of King Seongjong’s reign), Samgang Haengsildo was translated into Hangeul and widely distributed. Samgang Haengsildo is a book that praises 105 exemplary individuals—35 loyal subjects, 35 filial sons, and 35 virtuous women— by depicting their deeds through illustrations and texts. In 1428 (the 10th year of King Sejong’s reign), an incident occurred in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do, where a man named Kim Hwa killed his father. When the event was reported to the court, officials argued that the criminal should be severely punished under the law of gangsangje (the harsh punishment of a crime that extends to the criminal’s family and community).

In response, King Sejong, in 1432 (the 13th year of his reign), published Samgang Haengsildo to promote Confucian Values among the people. However, at that time, because Hangeul had not yet been created, the book was written in Chinese characters with explanatory notes, making it difficult for the common people to understand. Later, during the reign of King Seongjong, Samgang Haengsildo was translated into Hangeul and widely distributed to the people.
